Alexa’s thoughts on perception

Alexa Fortune wrote a poem about, what she calls, an uneasy encounter. A poem that reflects her thoughts after the realization of someone who had undermined her. A poem that was written out of emotion (anger) about perception.

The motivation to write for Alexa is based on a decision she made to cross off her things from a bucket list. She had been contemplating whether she should start a poetry page on the social medium Instagram. She has a lot to say and her poems are based on her deepest emotions. We are true fans of this South African poetess, who lives in Cape Town. You can find her on Instagram when searching for the username Snippets_of_A.

About this poem

It’s all about perception. Perception, the ability to comprehend or just to observe, it is so important. Alexa realizes this, based on her personal experiences. The basis of this poem is an uneasy encounter with someone she doesn’t really want to mention. After she realized the way he undermined her, it made her very upset (angry). He had an idea about what Alexa was or is. This, however, was not based on reality. This was based on his own perception. That isn’t the best part of perception since this is (of course) very subjectively. The perception of this person was based on just one moment.

To share her vision about this thing called perception, Alexa decided to write this poem. Judgement is sometimes based on only a short moment when two people meet each other. There is a saying: “You can only make one first impression.” That is definitely true. And it makes it even more difficult for Alexa – and many others- to get rid of these false ideas. Judgement, according to Alexa, is based on a quick decision, sometimes.

The advice of Alexa: don’t be too quick when it comes to judgement.

Alexa's thoughts on perception

Your perception of me
and what you expect me to be.
I sense your perceived reality
The Block in your mentality
That I am not of worth to thee
It shows in your posture I see
I don’t intend on changing for you to agree
I am more than the time you have spent in my company.
