Analysis

Faith and God are the most important ingredients of this poem. It all depends on how you want to see this higher being or spirit. Given the ideas about religion, it is safe to assume that Bradstreet was sharing her views on religion. Those weren’t different from others in the period she lived. What was different: she was a woman, who wrote poetry and got her work published.

Bradstreet is supposed to be asleep, just like others. Except, she isn’t. She decides to pray, to comfort her. With the hope that her god will listen to her, comfort her and will show kindness. Only those good things, people hope for. It shows that Bradstreet wasn’t only deeply moved by religion. It also showed that she was someone who tried to find the answers on questions that were haunting her. Even in the deep night.

Consider this poem a promise. If her god shows her love, she will give devotion in return. It was her answer to the problems they faced, once the Bradstreet family immigrated to the United States.

By night when others soundly slept

1

By night when others soundly slept
And hath at once both ease and Rest,
My waking eyes were open kept
And so to lie I found it best.

2

I sought him whom my Soul did Love,
With tears I sought him earnestly.
He bow’d his ear down from Above.
In vain I did not seek or cry.

3

My hungry Soul he fill’d with Good;
He in his Bottle put my tears,
My smarting wounds washt in his blood,
And banisht thence my Doubts and fears.

4

What to my Saviour shall I give
Who freely hath done this for me?
I’ll serve him here whilst I shall live
And Loue him to Eternity
