She considers this poem to be one of her best poems. This poem reflects her thoughts when it comes to the one she loves. This is about the moment when you realise that you are simply lost when someone stares into your eyes.

Analysis

Oh, love! Isn’t that a wonderful thing? The Isley Brothers sang about this wonderful feeling in the Sixties.

What if this wonderful thing is also that thing that terrifies you. What if this thing comes too close and you realise that your heart is just overwhelmed? That there is nothing to do than to tear down the walls that hold back your emotions. What if the other comes too close and will hurt you? This is what the poem written by Debanjana is about.

She considers this one to be one of her – as she calls it – favourite poems. It discusses the emotions that are part of the process of love or loving. This starts with the eyes. Everything seems to disappear and time seems to be paused. What happens next? Will this lead to even more beautiful things or will this lead to heartbreak?

Eyes

Eyes

I wonder what happens to me
when he stares into my eyes,
He doesn’t just look into
the shimmering pair,
but walks through
the gates of my soul.

And what terrifies me,
is that I haven’t let anyone
this close.

And if he can,
by a simple glare,
turn my world around,
then I wonder what he can
when he starts
to graze against
my skin.
