Hamlet

Have you ever read William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (short: Hamlet)? A play written so many centuries ago, still the inspiration for so many. This was also a great inspiration for Willem M. Roggeman.

Willem Maurits Roggeman (Willem M. Roggeman, 1935) is a Flemmish poet and writer of prose. He is also known for his essays about literature and artwork.

Hamlet was written by Shakespeare somewhere between 1600 and 1602. It is a typical form of tragedy and is know for the monologue (soliquie) To be or not to be. This monologue is spoken by Hamlet.

At the time the play was written, England was introduced with a new form of tragedy, called revenge tragedy. Thomas Kyd was the first writer to introduce this form of tragedy when he wrote The Spanish Tragedy. Revenge plays an important role in Hamlet. I won’t get any deeper into the plot.
