About the poetess and her poem

Anna Ahkmatova, born as Anna Andrejevna Gorenko (1889 – 1966) wrote some beautiful poems during her life. Her work is translated many times.

The poem Memory of the sun isn’t about depression. You might think that it is since she uses metaphors that are often used when describing this physical condition. The winter in this poem is the last part of someone’s life. The sun is the metaphor for beauty and youth.

There is the only loneliness in this winter, but still, there is beauty to be found. This beauty can be compared to summer or the previous years. This poem shows that age isn’t something that defines the lack of beauty or possibilities.
Memory of the sun

Memory of the sun

Memory of sun seeps from the heart.
Grass grows yellower.
Faintly if at all the early snowflakes
Hover, hover.

Water becoming ice is slowing in
The narrow channels.
Nothing at all will happen here again,
Will ever happen.

Against the sky the willow spreads a fan
The silk’s torn off.
Maybe it’s better I did not become
Your wife.

Memory of sun seeps from the heart.
What is it? — Dark?
Perhaps! Winter will have occupied us
In the night.

— Anna Akhmatova
