Not everyone is able to find the right book containing the work of Emily Dickinson. That is why we put together a list of essential books when it comes to the work of this American poetess.
If only it was so easy. Just to name the titles that were written by Emily Dickinson. If you don’t know better, we have to disappoint you: there is not one title available that was written by Dickinson herself. Yes, the books available consist of the poems written by this poetess. Since she never published a collection of poetry during her life, all these books are published after her death. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing since many editors took the time to share the most beautiful poems written by Dickinson.
Ralph W. Franklin – The Poems of Emily Dickinson (1999, Belknap Press)
This book is probably the most credited and reviewed book. He made a decision to include the poems that were part of her manuscripts. He made some brave and defendable decisions to include certain poems. Without ruining the work of other editors, we can only conclude that this book is the masterpiece when it comes to the work of this great poetess.

Thomas H. Johnson – The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson (1976, Back Bay Books; Later Printing edition)
This is an impressive collection of the poems of Emily Dickinson, compiled by Thomas H. Johnson. He did something that was considered impossible: he managed to apply chronology to the work of Dickinson. This wasn’t an easy task to perform, as many of the poems did not contain dates and there is always the problem with the titles of these poems.

Jen Bervin / Marta Werner – Envelope Poems (New Directions; 1 edition (October 4, 2016)
This is a remarkable book! It combines poems written by Dickinson with her own words. These are poems written on repurposed envelopes. Such creativity! It doesn’t get more personal than this!

The Essential Emily Dickinson (Ecco; 2 edition (November 8, 2016)
Be careful when using terms such as essential. Is there such a thing as the essential collection? It suggests that any other work doesn’t come close. Is it really? Well, to be honest: 79 pages doesn’t come close to anything but essential. That is not a bad thing, considering that you will find this one to be a good introduction to the work of Emily Dickinson.
This book contains an introduction written by Joyce Carol Oates.
